Assignment

Good morning, boys and girls! This is going to be our remote lesson for Building Blocks for week 2. (Parents, this will be the last Building Blocks lesson that will be posted here. From the week of April 13th and on, these lessons will be sent home by teachers to keep things streamlined a bit.) Anyway, I hope you enjoyed working with Ina last week from Powerful You. On to week 2!

This week, I am posting a picture that went home in your blizzard bags last week. It is the Inside Out characters talking about calming corners. Click on the link below and discuss with your family our calming corners and centers at Jacques. Think about and discuss some of these questions:
  • Why did we have these calming corners and centers at our school?
  • What feelings did we feel when we used them?
  • What types of things could you do when you went to these corners or rooms?
  • Lastly, how did you feel when you left them?
Mrs. Burns's suggestion is to think of a area in your room or home where you can have a quiet corner or space. During times at home when you are feeling upset or worried, use these calm down areas. AND don't forget to use your Alphabreaths!

Stay tuned for more lessons soon with Powerful You and Alphabreaths. I miss you all!

Assignment

Welcome to Remote Learning week 1! I hope my first grade and kindergarten friends are doing well and I am sure you are all very busy doing all your school work! I am excited to be able to bring you Building Blocks from my home! Parents, each week there will be 3 pieces to a lesson.  Do what you can with the lessons and if children would like to email me any of their work, I would love to see it! They are as follows:
  • First, there will be a link to practice a new Alphabreath. Students are familiar with these and this is a great time to practice taking deep breaths!
  • Second, there will be a link for reading together the short Powerful You lesson. This letter of the alphabet goes along with the letter you practice for Alphabreaths.
  • Lastly there will be a link to a book on the Epic website that goes along with the lesson from Powerful You.
              Ok, kids, here we go!
  • This week's letter is I for IGNORING INA. Talk about how you can work on ignoring distractions when you are trying to focus or get your work done.
  • This week's Alphabreath is I for ICE: Sit very still like you are frozen in ice. Notice how your body moves as you breathe in and out.
  • Lastly, read This morning I went to Mars from Epic. Here is the link: https://www.getepic.com/app/read/68816

Good luck, be well, and keep in touch!
Sincerely, Mrs. Burns

Assignment

Hi Jacques Parents-
I wanted to post this information since you might be experiencing some new behaviors from your child(ren) that you have not seen before.  Or perhaps behaviors have intensified over recent weeks.  I obtained this information from the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (www.NCTSN.org) regarding Parent/Caregiver Guide to Helping Families Cope With the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). There is a section that highlights how children might respond to this crisis depending on their age. Below are some reactions and the best ways you can respond:

PRESCHOOL Age Possible Reactions:
*Fear of being alone, bad dreams
*Speech difficulties
*Loss of bladder/bowel control, constipation, bed-wetting
*Change in appetite
*Increased temper tantrums, whining, or clinging behaviors
How can you help:
-Patience and tolerance
-Provide reassurance (verbal and physical)
-Encourage expression through play, reenactment, story-telling
-Allow short-term changes in sleep arrangements
-Plan calming, comforting activities before bedtime
-Maintain regular family routines
-Avoid media exposure

SCHOOL AGE (6-12) Possible Reactions
*Irritability, whining, aggressive behavior
*Clinging, nightmares
*Sleep/appetite disturbance
*Physical symptoms (headaches,stomachaches)
*Withdrawal from peers, loss of interest
*Competition for parents’ attention
*Forgetfulness about chores and new information learned at school
How you can help:
-Patience, tolerance, and reassurance
-Play sessions and staying in touch with friends through telephone and Internet
-Regular exercise and stretching
-Engage in educational activities (workbooks, educational games)
-Participate in structured household chores
-Set gentle but firm limits
-Discuss the current outbreak and encourage questions. Include what is being done in the family and community
-Encourage expression through play and conversation
-Help family create ideas for enhancing health promotion behaviors and maintaining family routines
-Limit media exposure, talking about what they have seen/heard including at school
-Address any stigma or discrimination occurring and clarify misinformation

Assignment

Hello Jacques Parents,

To say this has been a stressful time for parents seems to be an understatement.  There is so much uncertainty in our world and much of what is happening is out of our control.  This can cause many feelings such as anxiety, anger, and grief. I will do my best to support you as we navigate through all of this uncertainty.  I will be providing community/online resources, self-care ideas, and stress management techniques. Please know that I am here to help and that we can get through this together!  You can send an email to [email protected] or leave me a voice mail at 673-4434 ext. 4005.
