Week 12
Good Afternoon JMS Families!
Thank you for participating in parent conferences. One topic that is often discussed during conferences is how to support and reinforce learning at home. While homework is not common, in our students can benefit from “purposeful practice”, just like we have with music and sports. In order to become a better reader, writer, and mathematician, we need to practice as well. Taking time at home to read, write, and complete this “purposeful practice” is a major contributing factor to your child’s success. Twenty minutes of reading each night adds up to over 122 hours of reading in a year! Thank you for your continued commitment to your child’s learning. We appreciate it!
First Trimester Report Cards: The first trimester ends this Friday, December 2nd. Report cards will be sent home with students to parents/guardians on Friday, December 9th. Our report card is a standards based report card. It provides information about your son/daughter's level of proficiency in relation to end-of- year grade level learning standards. Please look for this important document.
You will also find several other important reports enclosed. Each student will receive an Acadience benchmark report. The purpose of Acadience Reading is to monitor your child’s development in reading, identify students who need additional help, and to guide the teacher’s instruction. Also for first grade students an additional report will be included. This is is the NWEA-MAP benchmark report. This measures in both math and reading. These reports will be sent home with each trimester with every report card each . Please connect with your child’s teacher if you have any questions about the report card or the other enclosed student assessment reports.
Word Play: On Thursday, December 8th JMS will hold their first ever Word Play Event at JMS. This evening event is all about oral language development. Jacques Memorial Elementary School (JMS) and Milford Early Education Experiences (MEEE) are happy to announce that we will be hosting a Word Play evening - complete with pizza for dinner and fun family activities!
Did you know that one of the best predictors of literacy success is oral language? Did you know that the way you talk to your child at a young age has a high correlation to their IQ score? We are here to guide you through activities that you can replicate at home in order to set your child up for success. All activities are designed to get our kids talking as much as possible and challenge them to push the limits of what they know and the best part is that they will be FUN!

Square One Art Update: Please be aware that the deadline for ordering any Square One Art product and receiving the product prior holidays is this Friday, December 2nd.
Recess in Winter: Winter weather is on the way! Please remember to dress your child appropriately. Recess is outside every day that the temperature is above 12 degrees. In order to play in the snow, children must be dressed from “head to toe”. Children must have hats, mittens/gloves, snow pants and boots. We also ask you to label their clothing. If clothing is labeled, we make every attempt to match it to its owner.
December Birthday Celebration
Our school-wide December birthday celebration is scheduled for Friday, December 16th.

At the end of last month on Thanksgiving Day we all paused to take a breath, assess our good fortune and give thanks for what we value. In education, we are thankful for the opportunities to impact young lives. Our students are the reason we’re here. Their learning and progress is our mission.
