Week 20

Good Afternoon JMS Families,

We are approximately half way through the 2022-23 school year. I am amazed at the growth and progress our students have made!  Learning is in full swing and their confidence and independence is truly remarkable.  Thank you for reading this weeks update!

PTO Read-a-Thon

Our MES PTO gives an incredible amount of support to our school and community.  They provide funds to support enriching experiences and volunteers for all of our events. Our School community is forever grateful for their ongoing support.

This year, we are excited to announce that the MES PTO will hold a Read-a-thon fundraiser. The  Read-a-thon is a program that brings students together with family and friends to encourage reading and to build literacy skills. The main focus of the Read-a-thon is for everyone to know we are committed to improving reading skills. To that end, the Read-a-thon promises to be a fun, exciting journey for all participants as they begin a personal Reading Adventure that challenges each reader to complete 10 reading sessions over our 2-week event. Our Read-a-thon will start February 1, 2023.

Members of our MES PTO will be visiting with our students later this week to kick off the event.  Information will be sent home on how to establish your child’s Readathon Fundraiser account.  Student’s accounts should be activated at home with the help and consent of their family.  Please have your child register with their first name and last initial. By simply activating your reader’s personal page and using the promotional tools found there, friends and family anywhere in the world can show their support for your reader and our MES PTO by making a donation to our Read-a-thon.

Students can earn prizes for participating as individuals, classroom teams and grade level teams.  The top reader and fundraiser at Jacques will win a special escort to school from the Milford Fire and Police Departments!  Your involvement in the Read-a-thon will help your child develop a lasting love of reading. We hope each one of you will activate your child’s personal page the day your child brings home their paperwork.

Student Social Strengths Screener

Jacques Memorial School is committed to every student's academic growth as well as their social emotional and behavioral growth. It is our shared goal that our students develop the skills required to regulate their emotions, develop positive relationships and make responsible decisions. As part of this process, we are asking all parents to complete a Student Social Strengths Screener.

If you have not yet done so please take some time to complete this short survey. Please click on the link below. Thank you to all parents and guardians who have done so already! We will continue to collect responses until February 3rd, 2023.

“Eat the Rainbow” Challenge

Throughout the month of January students and staff are encouraged to eat the rainbow of healthy fruits and vegetables.  This is “Eat the Green and Blue” Challenge week and students are offered and encouraged to try green grapes and broccoli provided by our food service department.  Here is the schedule for the remainder of January:

1/23: Green

1/30: Blue

Emergency Drills

Your child may have shared with you that they practiced emergency drills at school recently. We practice a variety of emergency drills throughout the school year so that we are familiar with procedures in the unlikely event of an emergency.  These drills include Shelter in Place procedures and Reverse Evacuation when students need to enter the building from the playground quickly. We often conduct these drills in coordination with Milford Police and Fire Departments.

In the event of a local emergency please help us by remaining calm. Do not call the school, police or fire department.  The school district will utilize an automated telephone notification system to inform you about the situation.  Please make every effort to provide the school with current telephone numbers and student medical information.

January Birthday Celebration

We will celebrate all students with  January birthdays this Friday, January 27th 2023.

Please find attached to this email the February School Lunch Menu and a flier from our community partners at the Wadleigh Library.

Thank you all for your continued support and partnership in your child’s education.

Sincerely,

Tim O’Connell
